A respected knight, diplomat, and military commander, he fought in numerous campaigns and tournaments, earning admiration from kings and nobles alike. He is best remembered for his role in the Polish-Lithuanian victory over the Teutonic Order at the Battle of Grunwald (1410) and for his legendary reputation as a warrior who was never defeated in combat.
In Polish culture, the phrase "Polegać jak na Zawiszy" ("to rely on someone like Zawisza") is still used today to describe a person of absolute trustworthiness and honor.
